Zatta, Antonio.   Storia dell’ America Settentrionale Del Signor Abate Raynal…in Venezia, Dalle Stampe Di Antonio Zatta…M.DCC.LXXVIII (1778). Folio (size 16.5 x 11 inches). Rebound in full tree calf with ornate gilt spine compartments and gilt ruling around boards.  Complete with Fifteen fine double page map plates (measuring 16 x 20.75 inches) in original outline color, and 124 pages of text. Very clean and crisp.

Twelve of the fifteen maps in this atlas represent the first Italian edition of John Mitchell’s famous 1755 Map of the British and French Dominions in North America.

Mitchell’s map is considered “the most important map on American history” (Cumming, The Southeast in Early Maps, p. 47; see also Schwartz & Ehrenberg, The Mapping of America, p. 164 & pl 96; Tooley, The Mapping of America, p. 317; Ristow, A la Carte, pp 103-108 and 113; The Dictionary of American Bibliography, XIII, p. 51).

Text by Raynal comes from his popular history of the European colonies in the Indies and America.  It was condemned by the Parliament of Paris for impiety and for its dangerous ideas on the people’s right to revolt.

Binding in fine condition -- Plates very clean and beautifully colored.  A SUPERB and historic atlas!
