''MAP OF NORTH AMERICA'' Philadelphia: S. Augustus Mitchell, c. 1839.  Engraved map with original hand-coloring.(Image: 10 1/2 x 8 1/4’’)

This map shows the North American continent as it existed in the early 19th century.  Topographical features are shown and distances to various parts of the world are given. The U.S. Boundary extends north to the controversial 54° 40'.

The INDEPENDENT REPUBLIC OF TEXAS is shown with its vast boundaries extending north along the Rio Grande to the Arkansas River (an area included within Texas’ boundaries until the Compromise of 1850). Indian Tribes are well located throughout the map, along with major cities, military forts and water routes.

Mitchell left the profession of teaching and began a career as a highly successful cartographic publisher whose name was synonymous with the introduction of school children to geography (Maps of Texas & the Southwest, Martin & Martin).
