''A NEW MAP OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA...'' London:  John Cary, c. 1806. Beautifully engraved map with original hand-coloring.(Image: 17 7/8 x 20'')

This map shows the United States from the Atlantic westward past the Mississippi River.  Of particular interest: is the vast information provided regarding Native American Indians - their present and ancient villages, hunting grounds, and boundary lines.

Georgia is shown with the boundaries extending to the Mississippi River, (as it appeared prior to the Mississippi Territory created in 1798).

The Western Territory is shown as it existed prior to its subdivision in 1800.

Illinois Company” and “Jersey  Company” are also located in the Western Territory (these companies were comprised of men from Virginia, Maryland, Philadelphia and London who held claims to land in the Illinois Country and sought to establish towns and develop trade.  They were terminated in 1784 after Virginia ceded her western land).

Near Lake Superior is the notation that ''Hereabout a settlemt. Of the N.W. Company''.  A fascinating view of the United States just prior to the great western exploration and expansion.
