"Plan of the City of Washington..." c 1863 - Mitchell

$0.00

“PLAN OF THE CITY OF WASHINGTON. The CAPITOL of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”  Philadelphia:  S. Augustus Mitchell,  Jr., c. 1863 from the New General Atlas (dated 1861 in the lower margin but published in the 1863 Atlas).  Engraved map with original hand-coloring.(Image: 11x13 ½’’)

This Civil War era map shows the capitol city and Georgetown in considerable detail.  Major buildings and streets are identified.

Washington remained vulnerable throughout the Civil War (Virginia lay directly across the Potomac, and Maryland, though it did not join the Confederacy, was home to many Southern sympathizers). In July 1864, a rebel surprise attack, led by Jubal Early, threw the population and politicians into panic.  Despite a string of forts surrounding the city, Federal troops remained hard-pressed to defend the capitol from a Confederate advance from the Shenandoah Valley.
