This handsome map depicts the New State of Kansas (admitted 1861), and Territories of Nebraska (admitted 1867 and shown here extending westward to include part of present-day Wyoming), Colorado (admitted 1876) and the southern portion of Dacota (this region includes part of present-day Wyoming - which was made a Territory in 1868, and Dacota which was split into North and South Dakota and admitted in 1889).
Counties are in contrasting colors and topographical features shown. Indian Tribes and “ancient ruins” are located throughout the map.
Major towns, cities, rail routes, land routes (including the Pony Express Route - the dotted line following the “Nebraska or Platte River”) and water routes are identified, and exploratory routes delineated.
Also of note: the Black Hills region in “Dacota” is shown where in just a few years (1875) gold would be discovered & Indian Wars would commence (Battle of the Little Big Horn in 1876).
