France: Vicinity of Lyon, c. 1470.

The two-line illuminated “D” begins Psalm 130 (King James 131) complete: “Domine…” (Lord my heart is not exalted: nor are my eyes lofty. Neither have I walked in great matters, nor in wonderful things above me.  If I was not humbly minded, but exalted my soul: As a child that is weaned is towards his mother, so reward in my soul. Let Israel hope in the Lord, from henceforth now and forever).

The two-line illuminated “E” begins Ecclesiasticus (King James Sirach) 24:24: “Ego mater…” (I am the mother of beautiful love, and of fear, and of greatness, and of holy hope).

The two-line illuminated “N” begins the Canticle of Simeon – Luke 2:29-32: “Nunc…” (Now thou dost dismiss thy servant, O Lord, according to thy word in peace; Because my eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all peoples: A light to the revelation of the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel).
