Breviary Leaf, c. 1390 - For use of the Augustine Hermits

$0.00

Original leaf from a medieval manuscript Breviary.  30 lines of precise Latin miniscule Gothic textura script (eleven lines to the inch!!!) in double columns with dark brown and red ink on animal vellum. (112 x 85mm)

Thirteen two-line illuminated initials alternating in red and blue.  Southern France, c. 1390.

This manuscript was written for the use of the Augustine Hermits.  The calendar mentioned two feasts that refer to the southern French bishoprics of Orange & Carpentras (Eutropius, May 27, who was Bishop of Orange until his death in 475; and Siffrein November 27, who was the Patron Saint of Carpentras).

The two-line illuminated ''P'' begins: ''Preces...'' (Mercifully hear our prayers, we beseech Thee, O Lord, and stretch forth the right hand of Thy majesty against all our adversaries...).

The two-line illuminated ''M'' begins: ''Mentes nostras...'' (Enlighten our minds, we beseech Thee, O Lord, with the light of Thy brightness: that we may be able to see what we ought to do, and have strength to do what is right...).

A Breviary is composed of many books (prayers, hymns, psalms...) painstakingly but carefully written by hand, and used by monks and priests to conduct their daily services.
