$0.00

Original woodcut, on hand-made paper, from a Biblical emblem book: Bibliorum Utriusque Testamenti Icones… illustrated by Jost Amman – renowned designer for the Feyrabend publishing house.

Frankfurt: printed by Georgius Corvinus for Hieronymus Feyerabend, 1571. Verso: Blank.(130 x 90mm – 5 1/8 x 3 ½’’)

The graphic scene is from Isaiah 6. Following his guilt for having looked directly at God in a vision, the scene depicts God sending an angel holding tongs with a live coal which has been taken from the altar.  He touches Isaiah’s mouth saying “Behold this hath touched thy lips, and thy iniquities shall be taken away, and thy sin shall be cleansed” (Isaiah 6:7).

The scene is surrounded by an elaborate baroque strapwork border.
