1474 Incunabula Leaf - Rainerius De Pisis

$225.00

An original incunabula leaf from RAINERIUS DE PISIS (d. c. 1348).  Pantheologia, sive Summa universae theologiae(400  x 277mm – 15 ¾ x 11’’)

Printed in Augsburg by Günther Zainer in 1474.

Bibliographical references: Goff R-6, BMC ii 321, Gesamtkatalog der Wiegendrucke 36921.

Beautifully printed by Zainer on fine watermarked paper in two columns of 57 lines each, with woodcut and hand-painted initials. This example contains chapters 109, 110, and 111 (p). Chapter 109 is notably enhanced with a bold eight-line woodblock initial hand-painted with a red “A” in characteristic Zainer style.

This is a scarce leaf from the 1474 edition, preceded only by the 1473 Nuremberg edition - the oldest theological encyclopedia and one of the longest books ever composed in the Middle Ages. Though the Dominican author was Italian,  the first five of the six editions printed in the 15th-century appeared in Germany, suggesting that the manuscript quickly found its way to Nuremberg, where the celebrated humanist, physician and bibliophile Hartmann Schedel  may have helped to see the formidable tomes into print. (Ref: Rhodes, BMC Notes on Rainerius).
