Original leaf from an illuminated manuscript of the Jeleel el Khorat (Dala’il al-Khayrat). Written on thin native handmade glazed paper. (210x130mm – 8 ¼ x 5’’).  Persia, c. 1700-25.

Very fine calligraphy in red and black ink - 11 lines of text with subscript entirely in red, within an illuminated floral border. Margins ruled in orange, gold, and blue.  The interlinear divisions are in burnished gold.

This leaf is from a manuscript formerly in the collection of Henry White of Queen’s Gate, and sold by Sotheby’s of London in April 1902. The original text was composed by Muhammed ibn Sulayman al-Jazuli, and is one of the most popular devotional prayer books of Islam.
