Original incunabula leaf from the very scarce Bible in Latin printed by Johannes Herbort in Venice 30 April, 1484 on watermarked paper.(280 x 205mm - 11 x 8 1/8'') 

58 lines of text in double columns.       

One large hand illuminated initial ''V'' (35x35mm square) in shades of green with an interior geometric design in pink and white, and resting on a burnished gold ground surrounded by black and all inside a square blue bar. Three hand-illuminated initials alternating is blue and red.

This leaf is from an outstanding edition of the Latin Bible, one of the Fontiubus ex Graecis editions (These Bibles were the first to use the original Greek and Hebrew manuscripts to improve the common Latin Vulgate Bible text.  Full editions of this Bible are exceedingly rare and only two copies are known to be held in the special collections of German libraries. Reference: Darlow and Moule #6083 and 6086 (note).

This leaf contains text from Exodus 39:4 - Leviticus 3:10 (Ornaments of Aaron & his sons are made; the tabernacle is finished; details on offerings): “Duasque oras sibi…” (And two borders coupled one to the other...For the cloud of the Lord hung over the tabernacle by day, and a fire by night, in the sight of all the children of Israel throughout all their mansions...).
