Torah Fragment - The 10 Commandments - c. 1700-1750

$0.00

Manuscript Torah Scroll fragment of three panels in black ink on beautiful golden brown deer parchment. (480 x 403 mm – 19 x 15 7/8'') Forty-two lines per column, written in a clear and precise Hebraic script.

Northwestern Africa (Algeria or Morocco), circa 1700-1750.

This fragment is from Exodus and includes Exodus (Shemot) 19:22 - 22:5, containing the Ten Commandments. Line #9 begins:  ''And God spoke all these words, saying, I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.  Thou shalt have no other gods before me...''.

The scroll was written on the hair side (Gvil) of specially prepared  deerskin in a process that darkened to a golden brown color over the centuries. The very soft parchment remains supple and legible despite centuries of use in the Synagogue.

It is a very beautiful example of exceptional calligraphy with particularly important content.
