Italy (Florence) c. 1470
Provenance: From a New Jersey collection - obtained from Mackus Company who attributed the leaf to Frater Julianus (Fra Giuliano Amadei), painter and Choir Book illuminator who was a Camaldolese Monk and student of Piero della Francesca.
The exceptional illuminated ''P'' (240 x 160mm) is painted in deep blue with a white floral design and a intricate interior and exterior of floral and geometric designs in red, blue, and liquid gold.
The large "P" begins the hymn for the Feast of St. Francis - written by St. Gregory: ''Proles de celo...'' (A son came forth from heaven, performing new miracles, opening the heavens to the blind, crossing water with dry feet...).
