Original leaf from a Spanish Antiphonal on animal parchment – written in Latin.  The manuscript text and music (five lines of music on a five-line stave) were beautifully executed by hand nearly 400 years ago!!!    (755 x 505 mm - 29 7/8 x 19 7/8’’).

One exceptional illuminated "N"  (10 x 10'') inhabited with Saints Peter  (left) and Paul (right).  The initial is in bright red & blue surrounded by a border of strawberries (symbol of perfect righteousness) on a yellow ground with stippled gold & surrounded by a magenta border.  The initial's interior depicts the standing figures of Saints Peter & Paul holding their attributes (keys & book, & sword).  They are shown receiving the Holy Spirit who hovers above them in the form of a dove.  Peter & Paul are considered the two Princes of the Apostles & the foundations of the Church.

The illuminated “N” begins Acts 12:11: "Nunc..."  (Now I know in very deed, that the Lord hath sent His angel...).

Antiphonals contain chants for the canonical hours of the Divine Office: first vespers or the vigil of great feasts, matins, lauds, prime, terce, sext, none, vespers and compline.
