Milbert, a French naturalist, artist, geographer, engineer, and scholar visited the U.S. in 1815-23.  He journeyed along the Hudson River and through the Northeastern states, recording his experiences with drawings he lithographed upon his return to Paris. 

He accurately recorded the varieties of animals, insects, birds, plants, foliage and minerals peculiar to the Western Hemisphere “in remarkable pictures and prose, which constitute a valuable document of American social and natural history” (Deak).
