Original leaf from a medieval manuscript Book of Hours. 15 lines of red-ruled, Latin  text, written with dark brown ink in lettre batarde script on animal vellum. (125x85mm) 

One three-line illuminated initial in blue on a burnished gold ground with a geometric interior design in pink and white; two two-line illuminated initials in blue/pink with delicate white tracery on a burnished gold ground, having a floral interiors in blue, green and pink on burnished gold ground; two one-line illuminated initials and one line-extender in burnished gold, on blue & red ground with delicate white tracery.

Panel border contains highly decorative floral designs with berries and acanthus leaves in blue, pink, green, orange and brushed and burnished gold.   Northern France (Brittany?),  c. 1450-60.

Miniature painting (68x45mm) of the Virgin of the Apocalypse:  The haloed Virgin Mary dressed in blue and red and wearing a gold crown stands on a golden crescent moon and holds the haloed Christ Child in her left arm.  They are surrounded by a mandorla with golden flames, which is then surrounded by numerous angels in deep blue facing the Madonna and Child.  Two attendants partially kneel with hands clasped at each lower corner.  

 The border surrounding the miniature contains highly decorative floral designs in multiple colors and burnished gold with a red angel with blue and gold wings holding a gold mandolin or lute

The three-line illuminated “D” begins: "Domine..." (Thou O Lord wilt open my lips And my mouth shall declare thy praise.). The two-line illuminated “D” begins: “Deus…” (Incline unto my aid O God. O Lord make haste to help me).
