$0.00

“MAURETANIA et NUMIDIA” Nuremberg: Christopher Weigel, c. 1720.  From Descriptio Orbis Antiqui by Johann David Koehler (1684-1785). Very fine engraved map with original hand-coloring. (Image: 19 x 21’’)

This very handsome historical map depicts the northwestern coastal region of Africa. Mauretania is the region of ancient North Africa corresponding to present northern Morocco and western and central Algeria north of the Atlas Mountains.

Numidia is a part of Africa north of the Sahara, the boundaries of which at times corresponded roughly with those of modern Algeria. Topographical features are well detailed with many of the major cities, towns and waterways identified. Arranged in a decorative pyramid is the appropriate ancient Roman coins for the region.
