This highly detailed map depicts  Brazil  in the early 1820's - one of the first separate maps of the almost independent Brazil.  Independence was declared September 7, 1822, occurring after the King of Portugal returned home from Brazil leaving his son in charge.  The last sentence on the text reads:  "The absolute and formal independence of this country on Europe, appears to be an event not far distant".  

Topographical features are shown, and most of the towns, cities, mountains and water-routes are identified. The text provides additional detailed information including that about boundaries, rivers, climate, Civil Divisions and Population, Commerce and Government.
