$0.00

“ROTOMAGUS, VULGO ROAN...” Cologne: Georg Braun & Frans Hogenberg from Civitates Orbis Terrarum (Cities of the World), 1572-1617. Engraved map with later hand-coloring. Verso text: Latin. (Image : 12 ¾ x 8 ¼’’) Ref: John Goss, The City Maps of Europe, pp. 104-105 (illustrated).

Braun & Hogenberg maps were the first systematic collection of town views - covering the most important urban centers of the Renaissance world. The cities depict “a true celebration of European history, civilization and culture. The plates not only map the layout & particular features of each city with amazing accuracy, but also illustrate local costume, occupations, manners & customs” (Goss intro).

Rouen, where Joan of Arc was tried & executed in 1431, was “a center of art & culture in France, & one of the first towns to reflect the growing influence of the Renaissance” (Goss).

Nîmes, in southwestern France was a large, important town in the Roman period. Agrippa built the baths, a temple to Diana & the Pont du Gard aqueduct seen near the right-hand edge of the plan. Part of the wall built by Augustus is also shown.

Bordeaux is located on the left bank of the Garonne in southwestern France. It is shown within the enclosed wall, which was erected following the sacking by the Vandals in AD 276.
