''NOVA HISPANIA ET NOVA GALICIA'' Amsterdam: Jan Jansson, c. 1638. Verso text Latin. Fine engraved map with original hand-coloring. (Image: 13 3/4 x 19’’)

This very detailed map depicts the region of NEW SPAIN to include MEXICO CITY & GUADALAJARA. The map depicts the region between present-day Mazatlan and just north of Acapulco.

Topographical features are shown and described with major towns, cities, mines, missions and Indian villages identified. Hundreds of settlements and several bridges are also located. At the mountain range in the north, the descriptive notes the rich deposits of silver to be found.  Other annotations describe manners and customs of Indians.

Also included are an elaborate cartouche, a ship, sea-monster, and (lower right corner) cupid coaxing two armadillos! The elegantly engraved calligraphy adds to the aesthetic appeal of the map.
