This map depicts the District of Alaska as it appeared in the 1890’s. Alaska was not officially made a territory of the United States until 1912.

Topographical features are depicted, and major cities, towns, islands, mountain ranges, volcanoes, water routes and land routes are identified throughout the District.

Of particular interest: the Gold Fields – and detailed routes to them are shown!

The Klondike Gold Rush began July, 1897 when two ships docked in San Francisco & Seattle carrying miners returning from the Yukon with bags of gold. The press was alerted & papers carried the story to the masses. Soon, miners of all shapes & sizes, called “Stampeders” were on their way to the gold fields. Within 6 months, approximately 100,000 gold-seekers set off for the Yukon. Only 30,000 completed the trip.
