''AMERICA SEPTENTRIONALIS. Novissima. AMERICA MERIDIONALIS. accuratissima.'' Amsterdam: Pieter Schenk, c. 1696. Engraved map with original hand-coloring. (Ref: McLaughlin, #120; Tooley, p. 125, #56; Leighly, J. #102; Burden #722). (Image: 19 ½ x 22’’)

This very scarce and beautiful map was separately issued. ''... Notable feature of this map is the two separate titles for North and South America. These, it is believed, are etched by the noted artist Romein de Hooghe...The map is uncommon as clearly there were legal disputes over the issue...'' (Burden).

It depicts California as an island with several place names provided (C. de Mendocino, Canal de S. Barbara, Pt. de Francisco Drake...). The R. del Norte (Rio Grande) flows westward from a large inland lake located just north of Taos. Buttons Bay and the Great Lakes are both left open-ended in the west – leaving open the possibility of a Northwest Passage.

In South America the mythical Prime Lacus straddles the equator, The Amazon River is shown as an elaborate network of waterways, and the Paraguay River has its headwaters I the spurious Xarayes Lake. Quiri Regio and Insule Salmonis are prominently featured in the Pacific.
