Original leaf from a medieval manuscript Bible. Latin gothic minuscule script, hand-written in brown ink, on animal vellum. (193 x 128mm) .
Seven multi-line illuminated initials alternating in deep blue with elaborate red penwork, and red with elaborate blue penwork - extending in to the margins. Numerous one-line illuminated initials alternating in deep blue and red. 56 lines of text in double columns (11 lines per inch!).
Produced in France, c. A.D. 1230 – early - prior to numbering of Psalms.
The illuminated ''I'' begins Psalm 26 (King James 27) 6-14: ''In petra...'' (He hath exalted me upon a rock...).
The first six illuminated multi-line initials begin Psalms 27 - 32 (KJ 28-33) complete: ''Ad te...'' (Unto thee will I cry, O Lord...); ''Afferte...'' (Bring to the Lord, O ye children of God...); ''Exaltabo...'' (I will extol thee, O Lord...); ''In te...'' (In thee, O Lord, have I hoped...); ''Beati...'' (Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven...); ''Exultate...'' (Rejoice in the Lord, O ye just..).
The illuminated ''B'' begins Psalm 33 (KJK 34) 1-15: ''Benedicam...'' (I will bless the Lord at all times...).
This leaf is from a ''portable'' Bible of the Crusades period & would have been used in abstract study of theology or preaching of the Gospel around medieval countryside.
