''MEXICO & GUATEMALA'' Philadelphia: Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co., c. 1850.  Fine engraved map with original hand-coloring. (Image: 12 1/8 x 15 1/8’’)

This very historical map depicts Mexico and Guatemala with districts in contrasting colors and topographical features well noted. Major towns, cities, missions, forts, waterways and major roads are identified.

The inset, lower left, depicts the ''Valley of Mexico'' - site of the ancient Aztec capital Tenochtitlan (now Mexico City).

The insets along the top depict ''The Isthmus of Tehuantepec'', ''The Isthmus of Nicaragua'', and ''Guatemala or Central America''.  Indian tribes are noted throughout - including the region of the ''United States''.

The line between the US and the Mexican State of Sonora reflects the boundary before the 1853 Gadsden Purchase. The key, lower left, also locates the sites of mines and major battles.  A highly informative view of the region as it existed in the mid-1850’s.
