Original leaf from a medieval manuscript folio Bible with illuminations from the Johannes Grusch WorkshopLatin gothic script, hand-written in brown ink, on animal vellum. (290x190mm) Rubricated chapter numbers, initials and marginalia in red and blue. 49 lines of text in double columns.         

This leaf is an example of vellum that was carefully and quite skillfully patched by the original artisans.  

France: Paris, c. 1247.

Formerly owned by the Royal Abbey of St. Genevieve in Paris.  

One eight-line illuminated initial – in blue with white tracery & an interior in colors of orange, blue & gold. The initial sits on a pink ground with white tracery & gold, & extends towards the top & bottom in blue, gold, orange, pink & white.

One five-lineilluminated initial in pink with white tracery & the same interior colors. The initial sits on a blue ground with white tracery & gold, & extends towards the top & bottom in blue, gold, orange, pink & white.

Four two-line illuminated initials alternating in blue with red pen-work, and red with blue pen-work, extending into the margin.

The large size of the page is unusual in 13th century Bible production!

This leaf contains a lexicon, or interpretation of Hebrew names, beginning with ''T'', and, following the illuminated initial, ''U'' and the illuminated initial ''Z''.
