Original leaf from an important printed & hand-illuminated Book of Hours. Ruled Latin text, printed in red & black on animal vellum.(165x115mm).

Initials, paragraph markers & endings illuminated by hand in gold, on grounds of blue and/or magenta.

Noted for its DECORATIVE BORDERS - the paneled surrounds are historiated or inhabited  - in the style of the Master of Anne de Bretagne. Printed by Thielma Kerver.

Ex collection:  Alexander Peckover, Baron Wisbech (1830-1919 - important English manuscript collector of the early 20th century).

The full-page panel depicts The Raising of Lazarus. This was a popular 15th century subject – alluding to mankind’s resurrection at the Second Coming – offering a hopeful prefiguration of God’s merciful forgiveness.

The illuminated ''D'' begins Psalm 114  (King James 115) – complete: ''Dilexi quoniam…'' (I have loved, because the Lord will hear the voice of my prayer. Because he hath inclined his ear unto me: and in my days I will call upon him…).

The illuminated ''A'' (verso) begins Psalm 119 (KJ 120): 1-4: ''Ad Dominum…'' (In my trouble I cried to the Lord: and he heard me…).
