$0.00

Original leaf from a printed Renaissance Book of Hours. Latin text in red and black on hand-made paper.  Printed by Thielman Kerver. (180x115mm).  Reference: Bohatta 810/813.

Paris, (Use of Rome), c. 1505.

Noted for its DECORATIVE BORDERS - the paneled surrounds are historiated or inhabited. The paneled surrounds include scenes from John’s Vision of the Apocalypse.

The three-quarter-page miniature depicts David and Bathsheba. King David is in the background looking out from his palace window and sees Bathsheba at her bath. Eventually David lures her inside and commits adultery.  A fitting miniature for the opening of the Penitential Psalms. The identical metal cut is illustrated in Roger Wieck, Painted Prayers #74.

The red two-line ''D'' begins: ''Deus…'' (O God, who didst allay the flames of fire for the three children, grant in Thy mercy that the flame of vice may not consume us, Thy servants).

The red two-line ''U'' begins: ''Ure igne…'' (Enkindle, O Lord, our hearts and minds with the fire of the Holy Spirit: that we may serve Thee with a chaste body and please Thee with a clean heart).

The red three-line ''D'' (beneath the miniature) opens Psalm 6: ''Domine…'' O Lord, rebuke me not in thy indignation, nor chastise me in thy wrath. Have mercy on me, O Lord…).
