Original incunabula leaf from the rare Epistole de San Hieronimo Vulgare printed by Laurentius de Rubeis in Ferrara October 12, 1497. (Ref: Goff H-178). (302 x 217mm - 12.1 x 8.7") Excellent, clean condition.

Roman type, 48 lines in two columns, printed in Italian. Two woodcut illustrations (each featuring St. Jerom and his lion companion), two white-vine and white on black woodcut initials.

From one of the most celebrated illustrated Italian books of the fifteenth century. This and the De claris mulieribus by Jacobus de Bergamo of the same year are considered the masterpieces of Ferrarese book illustration.

It is also the only illustrated incunabular edition of St. Jerome's Epistolae, and the first edition in Italian. The woodcuts are original to this edition.
