Original leaf from a medieval manuscript folio Bible with illuminations from the Johannes Grusch WorkshopLatin gothic script, hand-written in brown ink, on animal vellum. Rubricated chapter numbers, initials and marginalia in red and blue. 50 lines of text in double columns.   (290x190mm) 

France: Paris, c. 1247.

Formerly owned by the Royal Abbey of St. Genevieve in Paris. 

Two multi-line illuminated initials alternating in blue with intricate red scrollwork and red with intricate blue scrollwork –extending along the length of the text.

The large size of the page is unusual in 13th century Bible production!

Line 2 begins Luke 20:11 - 22:10: ''Et addidit...''  (And again he sent another servant...It is written, The stone, which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner...Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's: and to God the things that are God's..He saw a certain poor widow casting in two brass mites.  And he said: Verily I say to you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than the all: For all these have of their abundance cast into the offerings of God: but she of her want, hath cast in all the living that she had...Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there shall be great earthquakes...Then they shall see the Son of man coming in a cloud, with great power and majesty...Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away...).
