Original leaf from a medieval manuscript Book of Hours. 15 lines of text, ruled in red, written in Latin with dark brown and red ink in gothic script on animal vellum. (205 x 150mm – 8 x 6’’) 

One three-line illuminated initial in blue and white with a floral interior in blue, pink, white  and green on a burnished gold ground; two two-line illuminated initials, five one-line illuminated initials and five illuminated line extenders in gold on a blue and red ground; elaborate rinceaux border (verso) in red, pink, green, gold, blue, liquid and burnished gold.                                                                               

Northern France or French Flanders, c. 1450-75.

The two-line illuminated “E” begins the prayer:  “Ecclesiam…” (Make Thy church shine, we ask, O kindly Lord, so that illuminated by the teachings of blessed John Apostle and evangelist it may reach Thy eternal gifts. Through our lord Jesus Christ Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, O God, world without end. Amen Glory be to the Father, and to the…).

The three-line illuminated “C” begins the Hour of Compline:  “Converte…” (Convert us O God our savior. And avert thine ire from us. Incline unto my aid O God. O Lord make haste to help me…). 

The two-line illuminated “U” opens Psalm 12 (King James 13):  “Usquequod…” (How long, O Lord, wilt thou forget me unto the end)
