$0.00

The STATES of MARYLAND and DELAWARE from the latest Surveys. 1799” New York: John Low – published for John Payne’s New and  Complete Universal Geography,  c. 1799; drawn by Anderson and engraved by John Scoles. . Original engraved map with folds as issued.  Right margin extended to facilitate matting.  Ref:  Wheat & Brun #518 (state 1). (Image: 7 3/8 x 9 ¼’’)

One of the earliest maps of these states published in America. This very informative and scarce historical map depicts Maryland and Delaware as they were known in 1799!

The boundary between Maryland and Virginia is incorrectly shown to run down the middle of the Potomac River instead of along the Virginia shoreline as agreed in the Compact of 1785. Topographical features are shown with major roads, county names, cities (including Washington, Alexandria, Baltimore and Annapolis), towns, and swamps located.

The inset depicts the “Continuation of the Potowmac River from Fort Cumberland”.
