Fourteen lines of manuscript text beautifully executed by hand over 450 years ago!!! Original stitching in the upper and lower margins – still with original thread!

Spain, c. 1550.  This Choirbook once belonged to the Convent of San Pedro Regalado de la Aguilera, and was likely scribed there.

Two two-line illuminated initials in blue with intricate internal and external penwork in red; one illuminated initial in red with intricate internal and external penwork in blue.

This leaf continues the Feast of St. Michael the Archangel (29 September).  The illuminated “B” begins is a scribal error and should be a “V”:  “Benit (sic) Michael…” (The Archangel Michael came with a host of angels; to him God entrusted the souls of the saints, that he might lead them to the paradise of joy).

The illuminated “I” begins:   “In tempore…” (At that time shall Michael stand up, which standeth for your children. And there shall be a time, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time.  At that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the Book of Life).

Antiphonals contain chants for the canonical hours of the Divine Office: first vespers or the vigil of great feasts, matins, lauds, prime, terce, sext, none, vespers and compline.
