Original leaf from a miniature medieval manuscript Book of Hours. 14 lines of ruled text, ruled in red, written in Latin with dark brown ink in gothic script on animal vellum.(70 x 54mm – 2 ¾ x 2 1/8’’) One two-line illuminated initial and seven one-line illuminated initials in burnished gold on a red and blue ground with delicate white penwork.  Bars of burnished gold and red  extend along the text (recto) sprouting a floral spray top and bottom in blue, green, red, burnished and brushed gold.

The one-line illuminated “B” begins Psalm 50 (King James 51) 20-21:  “Benigne…” (Deal favorably, O Lord, in thy good will with Sion; that the walls of Jerusalem may be built up.  Then shalt thou accept the sacrifice of justice, oblations and whole burnt offerings: then shall they lay calves upon thy altar).  

The two-line illuminated “D” begins Psalm 101 (KJ 102) 1-5: “Domine…” (Hear O Lord my prayer: and let my cry come to thee.  Turn not away thy face from me: in the day when I am in trouble, incline thy ear to me.  In what day so ever I shall call upon thee, hear me speedily…).
