$0.00

“THE WORLD IN HEMISPHERES. WITH OTHER PROJECTIONS &c. &c.”  Philadelphia:  S. Augustus Mitchell, Jr.,1860, dated in the lower margin, and from the first edition of Mitchell's New General Atlas. with the distinctive dark border and bold colors of this edition.  Engraved map in excellent condition, with original hand-coloring. (Image 11 ¼ x 13”)

This map, with its highly decorative border, depicts the world with countries named and in contrasting colors.  Alaska is shown as “Russian America” (purchased by the U.S. in 1867).

The Antarctic Continent was still unexplored and only small portions of its coastline are delineated.

The chart at the top shows the comparative lengths of the world’s rivers.  The spheres at the bottom show the world from a polar projection, by Land and Water, and the “North Polar Region”.  Very detailed and attractive view of the world as it was known in the 1860’s!
