Original leaf from a medieval Breviary.  21 lines of ruled Latin text, written in gothic liturgical bookhand script on animal vellum. (139 x 99mm – 5 ½ x 3 7/8’’) 

Four multi-line initials alternating in deep blue surrounded by delicate red penwork and red surrounded with delicate blue penwork; intricate blue and red penwork extends the length of the text and into the margins.

Northern France or French Flanders, c. 1300.

The two-line illuminated “S” begins part of Romans 8:11: “Si spiritus eius…” (And if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, then he shall quicken also your mortal bodies, because of his Spirit that dwelleth in you).

The multi-lined “I” (verso) begins John 3:16:  “In illo tempore, Dixit ihesus discipulis suis; Sic deus dilexit mundum…” (And at that time Jesus said to his disciples:   For God so loved the world, as to give his only begotten Son; that whosoever believeth in him may not perish, but may have life everlasting).
