[TEXAS] New York & Chicago: Rand, McNally & Co., c.1898 (dated in the map). Color-printed map with original color. (Image: 19x26’’). Excellent condition and color, centerfold as issued.
This large attractive map depicts Texas in great detail! Rail routes are shown throughout the state with each stop noted. Counties are named & delineated in red, topographical features are shown & numerous water routes, mountains, cities & towns are identified. Major portions of New Mexico Territory & Indian Territory are shown (with Indian Tribes well noted on the latter).
Of particular interest is the recently created Sterling County (established 1891) – a two-mile-wide gap was left between Irion & Sterling counties, making Tom Green essentially two counties, connected only by this narrow channel.
Encinal County is still shown (southwest – near the Rio Grande). It would be abolished in 1899 & absorbed by Webb County. The additional chart along the left locates the “Chief Cities” in the state.
“Rand, McNally & Co. specialized in filling the great demand for maps & guidebooks occasioned by the westward expansion of the U. S. in the 2nd half of the 19th century... Their maps were constantly updated with new information & thus serve as an eloquent witness to the westward march of railroads, settlements, & counties as the frontier disappeared.” (Crossroads of Empire: Early Printed Maps of Texas & the Southwest, p.53).
