"Typus Orbis Terrarum" c 1641 World Map - Matthaus Merian

$0.00

“TYPUS ORBIS TERRARUM”  Matthaus Merian. . Frankfurt, c. 1641.  From Piazza Universale... " by Tommaso Garzoni. Engraved map with later hand-coloring. Reference:  Shirley #356 (A). (Image: 6 5/8 x 9 7/8'')

“On stylistic grounds the map is probably by Merian himself…” (Shirley). This decorative world map shows California as an island (following Brigg's map of 1625).  It displays the world in two hemispheres with symbols around them representing the sun and moon, and the four elements (fire, air, earth and water).

Admittedly, little is known about Antarctica which is labeled "Incognita".  "Terra Australis" continues nearly to New Guinea and includes Terra del Fuego. The Northwestern portion of the North American Continent and Arctic region is also a mystery.   Fascinating view of the world as it was believed to exist by the 1640’s.
