A scarce original etching by W.H.W. Bicknell after a painting by Howard Pyle (American 1853-1911), The Bibliophile Society Inc., [Boston], 1903. Limited edition, one of 302. Signed in the lower margin by Pyle in pencil. Additionally the image is signed in the plate by Bicknell, and has the seal of the Bibliophile Society.

"Richard de Bury Tutoring Young Edward III" depicts the youthful future king, seated while reading an illuminated manuscript, under his tutor's watchful eye. De Bury was a noted scholar, diplomat, bibliophile and Bishop of Durham.

This etching was one of five illustrations by Pyle issued as a "Portfolio of Etchings",  in a limited edition of 302 sets, published by the Bibliophile Society of Boston in 1903. The Society had commissioned Pyle to create a series of painting of famous authors and bibliophiles for a set of books by Thomas Froganall  Dibdin.  Ref: "Howard Pyle: A Record of His Illustrations and Writings," Morse and Brinckle, pp. 200-1.

The original painting was jointly acquired by the Brandywine River Museum and the Delaware Art Museum in 2006.
