An original etching titled “PRIMITIVE METHODS OF EARLY DAYS (PAN, ROCKER AND ARASTRA)” from Picturesque California And The Region West Of The Rocky Mountains by John Muir, ed. Artist: E. Narjot; Etcher: Joseph Lauber. Produced in San Francisco & N.Y. by J. Dewing & Co., c. 1888.

This view depicts men searching for gold in California by three different methods. In the center gold is panned, on the right the man uses the rocker, and on the left, the arastra.

E. Narjot (1827-98) was a California painter who came to San Francisco as a gold seeker in 1849. In 1865 he established a studio as a painter of genre scenes of the mining camps, portraits and murals. (Ref: Samuels, Ency. Of Artists of the American West).

Joseph Lauber (1855-1948) - mural painter, etcher & teacher. Pupil of K. Muller, Shirlaw & Chase; Member of Mural Painters, NY Architectural League…Winner of numerous medals at the Columbian Expo in 1893. (Ref: Fielding).
