This is Plate 353, The Nutmeg (Nux Moschata). Nutmeg is the seed of the tree and roughly egg-shaped. The first harvest of nutmeg trees takes place 7–9 years after planting, and the trees reach full production after twenty years. Nutmeg is usually used in powdered form. This is the only tropical fruit that is the source of two different spices, obtained from different parts of the plant, the other being Mace. Several other commercial products are also produced from the trees, including essential oils, extracted oleoresins, and nutmeg butter.
These 18th century herbals are from one of the first English botanical series to be issued with hand-colored plates. Published by Elizabeth Blackwell to free her physician husband from debtor’s prison. Due to the great success and popularity of this enterprise, her husband was indeed released (however he was later beheaded for his part in a political plot to alter the Swedish royal succession).
