“INDIAN TY.” Chicago: George F. Cram, c. 1883. Color-printed map from Cram's "Unrivaled Family Atlas of the World" with original color.(Image: 9 5/8 x 12 1/8’’)

This detailed map depicts Indian Territory almost 25 years prioir to Oklahoma statehood in 1907.The region of the originally relocated Five Civilized Tribes (Cherokee, Creek, Seminole, Chickasaw and Choctaw) are boldly noted .  Other tribes subsequently removed to the Indian Territory are also shown.

The topographical features are remarkably accurate - based on the U.S. Geological Survey.  Most towns, waterways, railroads, and depots are located.

“The Indian Territory was never an organized territory, but was set aside as a home for the Five Civilized Tribes, who were removed to it in the period 1820-45…Lands were held in common and each tribe had its own government.” (Scribners: Dictionary of American History, p.109).
