Original leaf from a manuscript Book of Hours by well known master, Jean Coene. 22 lines of text, ruled in red, written in Latin in gothic book-hand script on animal vellum. (160 x 103 mm - 6.4 x 4.1") 

This miniature is by the Master Jean Coene (also known as the Master of the Paris Entries), a prolific artist who was active in Paris for the French court under Louis XII and Francis I, and also collaborated with the workshop of the Master Jean Pichoire. Coene’s quick painting technique and the careful finish of his miniatures led him to be one of the most successful artists for a high-ranking clientele in early sixteenth-century Paris.

Northern France (Paris), c. 1510-20. 

Rubrics in red & line ending in red with liquid gold infill. Two  illuminated two-line initials alternating in white on gold ground and gold on blue ground. Marginal notation in French at bottom, verso, added by early 16th century owner.  Some devotional wear evident, pinhead sized hole inside lower border, verso..

Elaborate geometric panel borders with acanthus & floral motifs (including strawberries – symbol of perfect righteousness, and a red rose – symbol of martyrdom - on gold, red or sepia ground.

The Nine-line miniature painting on verso depicts Saint Barbara: A haloed St. Barbara is painted with her attribute, a tower with three windows, resting on her forearm.  

The two-line “O” begins “Orabat beata…” (Blessed Barbara who said she prayed to the Lord Jesus Christ…). 

The two-line “I” begins:  “Intercessio…” (May the intercession, we pray, O Lord, of blessed Barbara thy virgin and martyr protect us from all misfortune, so that through the most glorious intercession of the very holy body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ…).
