GEORGIA” Thomas Gamaliel Bradford. Boston: Weeks, Jordan and Co., c. 1838. Rare first edition – rare first issue – with outline color.  (Image: 14  x 11 3/8 ‘’)

Very fine & beautifully engraved map with original outline color.  Engraved by G. W. Boynton (owner of an engraving company in Boston 1830’s - 40’s).  From An Illustrated Atlas, Geographical, Statistical and Historical of the United States and Adjacent Countries by T.  G.  Bradford.

This detailed map depicts Georgia with the counties named and in outline color. Topographical features are shown with various land routes, water routes, cities and towns identified.  A very interesting and very scarce view of the region as it existed in the 1830’s.

Just six years earlier, to solidify their claim to Cherokee land the state of Georgia held two land lotteries that divided the Cherokee Nation in 160-acre lots and gave them to any Georgian who had four dollars in their pocket and won a chance to buy the land. Unfortunately, the Cherokee never ceded the land to either the state or federal government and the Supreme Court (in Worchester v. Georgia) ruled that state did not have the power to make a treaty with a sovereign nation.
