Very fine & beautifully engraved map with original outline color. Engraved by G. W. Boynton (owner of an engraving company in Boston 1830’s - 40’s). From An Illustrated Atlas, Geographical, Statistical and Historical of the United States and Adjacent Countries by T. G. Bradford.
This map depicts Maine with counties named and in outline color. Topographical features are shown, and major cities, towns, mountains, waterways and islands are identified.
“French of Acadian Settlements” are located in the north, and “Elevated Table Land” is noted in the northwest.
Also shown: True Boundary according to the Treaty of 1783, Line Claimed by Great Britain and Line as Proposed by the King of the Netherlands.
The controversial boundary question concerning the Northern Section between Maine, New Brunswick and Quebec, had its beginnings in vague or erroneous references taken from the Mitchell map of 1755. The Northern boundary of Maine was finally established as part of the Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842.
