Original leaf from a medieval Book of Hours. 15 lines of ruled text are written in Latin with dark brown ink in on animal vellum. . Devotional wear evident in the blue robe, some touch-up to paint in sky. (193 x 150 mm - 7.7 x 6")

Northern France or Flanders, c. 1450.

One three-line illuminated initial in burnished gold with an interior of pink with delicate white penwork all resting on a blue ground with white penwork. Eight one-line illuminated initials alternating in deep blue with red penwork, and burnished gold with blue penwork. The border surrounding the miniature and text is an intricate floral rinceaux design in burnished gold, red, green and blue

The miniature painting (100 x 85mm) depicts The Throne of Grace. This representation of the Trinity originates from Hebrews 4:16 (Let us go therefore with confidence to the throne of grace…). God the Father is shown wearing a triple crown and seated on a throne which rests on a green tile floor. His arms are outstretched supporting the Holy Cross which balances on top of a golden orb. Upon the cross is the crucified body of God the Son – his bloody wounds evident, while God the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove hovers above with his beak touching the head of Christ.  Similar iconography Walters Art Museum  W.246,fol.9v; Getty Museum Ms. Ludwig IX 5, fol. 184

The three-line illuminated ''D'' begins Psalm 6: 1-10: ''Domine...'' (O Lord, rebuke me not in thy indignation, nor chastise me in thy wrath.  Have mercy on me, O Lord...).
