Wonderful Terracotta Camel, c. 5th Century AD

$0.00

A molded red pottery camel having a single opening at the hump. The whimsical figure is embellished with geometric saddle blanket with straps, reins and harness. (117 x 106 mm – 4 1/2 x 4 3/16’’).

Eastern Roman/Byzantine, circa 5th century AD.

Maltese crosses are shown on the saddle bags. There is a small pour hole opening in the mouth, and the figure was possibly used as an oil container. It is in overall excellent condition, with scattered light surface deposits and tiny chips at the ears – an uncommon and attractive form!

Provenance: ex Leslie Margulis collection, acquired Arte Primitivo Gallery, NYC in 1999.
