“An Accurate Map of NORTH AMERICA with the NEW DISCOVERIES 1796”  Edinburgh:  Samuel John Neele, c. 1796. Fine engraved map with later hand-coloring.(Image: 7 5/8 x 9 1/8’’)

This very handsome map depicts North America as it appeared in the 1790’s.  The US extends to the Mississippi R. as a result of the 1783 Treaty of Paris ending the Revolutionary War. “Louisiana” was at this time under the Spanish flag (France ceded this colony to Spain in 1763 to spite the English - regaining it again in 1800).

“Texas” is named and included as part of the “New Mexico” region.  Several Indian tribes are located and major cities, towns, settlements and waterways are located.

The northwestern interior of the continent was virtually unknown.  Quivira, a city described to Coronado as “rich in gold with lordly rulers”, is noted in the northwest.  He spent 1540-42 searching for this fabled land of treasure.  Oñate also led an expedition in 1598 in hopes of finding the riches - founding a regional capital north of present Bernalillo, NM - which resulted in the establishment of Santa Fe in 1610 as the capital of the Spanish colony.  Quivira continued to appear on maps throughout the 18th century - spawning the imagination of the map-reader and explorer.

A very interesting view of the continent as it was known in the 1790’s.
