“NOVA TOTIUS HELVETIAE...” Augsburg: Matthias Seutter, c. 1730.  Fine engraved  map with full original hand-coloring.(Image : 19 1/4 x 22 1/8'')

This highly decorative map depicts Switzerland in great detail.. Topographical features are shown and most towns, cities, waterways, and mountains are located.

The title cartouche is typical of Seutter’s style - lavish and detailed!  It is flanked by river gods, arms of the Swiss Confederation and people engaged in agrarian pursuits.

Surrounding the map are vignettes of natural phenomena, including the Devil's Bridge in the Alps, whirlpools, fossils, avalanches, and even the legendary fire-breathing, winged dragon that is said to haunt the mountains near Lucerne. A lettered key along the top identifies the marvels illustrated in the map.

Following his apprenticeship to Homann, Seutter established his own successful business in Augsburg where he was appointed Geographer to the Imperial Court. Seutter, along with his son, Albrecht, and son-in-law, Conrad Lotter, produced some of the most attractive and accurate maps of the period.
