“L'EUROPE Divisee en ses Principaux Estats…” Alexis-Hubert Jaillot. Amsterdam:  Pierre Mortier, c. 1705. Engraved map with original hand-coloring (cartouche later hand-coloring).(Image : 18 3/4 x 23'')

This decorative map of Europe depicts the continent with countries and provinces well detailed.  Topographical features are shown and major cities, towns, waterways, mountains and islands are located.

The map extends to include Iceland and the northern coast of Africa.  The highly elaborate title cartouche features Athena with a globe and cartographic instruments, a soldier with symbols of war, and the royal coat-of-arms of France.

A decorative distance scale is shown in the lower left corner.

This map is typical of Jaillot (Geographer to the King of France) whose maps are “superbly presented with large, flamboyant title cartouches & other decorative features...are regarded as amongst the finest map publications of any period”. (Potter: Antique Maps, p. 103).
