c 1906 "Long Island" Wall Map - 5 feet long

$0.00

“LONG ISLAND''  New York: C S Hammond & Co, c. 1906.  Color-lithographed map with original color and backed on linen with the original folds as issued. (Image: 15 1/8 x 60’’)

Condition: Small loss at fold under "Jamaica".  A working map which shows evidence of use: a few manuscript notes from a former sailing owner & what is likely a tea or coffee stain in Noyack Bay. The map is offset very slightly at center where two portions adjoin (as issued). Usual light overall toning & fraying at edges.

This scarce separately issued elongated wall map depicts Long Island in great detail! It encompasses the entire length of the island from Manhattan and Brooklyn to East Hampton, with an inset map of Continuation of Eastern Part, from Napeague Beach to Montauk Point at a scale of 3 inches: 5 miles.

The map is labeled in detail, showing names of counties, beaches, towns, and islands.  It uses different types of lines to indicate the "Good Roads," "Fair Roads," "Ordinary Roads", "Bicycle Sidepaths along Roads", and "Bicycle Sidepaths no open Roads." Railroads & Long Distance Trolley Roads are also noted.

The names of post offices appear in upper case letters.  Numbers along the border denote the distance in miles from New York City Hall. Light Houses, Ellis Island Emigrant Sta., and the "Highest point in Suffolk Co" are also noted. Great map of the island as it existed at the start of the 20th century!!
